Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal
Once a tree is down, the stump is the last thing standing between you and a usable yard. You have two options — grinding or full removal — and for most homeowners the choice is clear once you know the trade-offs.
What stump grinding does
Grinding uses a machine to chew the stump — and surface roots where we can reach them — into chips several inches below the surface. The remaining roots stay in the ground and break down naturally over time. It's quick, far less disruptive to your yard, and lets you reclaim the space the same day.
What full stump removal involves
Full removal digs out the entire stump and root ball. It clears the roots completely, but it's a much bigger job: it leaves a large hole, tears up the surrounding ground, and usually costs more. It's really only worth it when you need the spot completely clear of roots — for example, before pouring a foundation or footing.
Which should you choose?
For the vast majority of yards, grinding is the right call. You get rid of the visible stump, stop most regrowth, and can plant grass or a garden bed over the spot — without excavating half the yard. Choose full removal only when the ground truly needs to be root-free for construction.
Replanting where a tree used to be
If you want to plant a new tree in the same spot, know that the old root system takes time to decay and the ground will be full of grindings. We can grind deeper and you can bring in fresh soil, or plant the new tree a little to the side — we'll talk it through so the replacement gets a good start.
